Race plan: Deploy, enjoy, destroy. 

Deploy-be in the pack for the first 16, don’t make any moves. 
Enjoy-from 16-20, enjoy the crowds. Match moves that make sense. 
Destroy-20-26.2 cover moves until I’m confident to go(with 2 miles or less). 

Got out well, and was surprised the pack was going so slow. Yuma Morii took the lead and Rory and I gapped the field in a blazing first kilometer of 3:34. They caught up quickly. 
Elkanah took the lead a little later, but we never went much faster than 5:00. There were a lot of moves by Rory, CJ, Frank, Evans Chebet, Wesley, and bibs 8&9, but none were very long and no one wanted to lead into the wind. 

My stomach felt a little fatigued from fueling a bit much beforehand, and the slow pace kept the adrenaline at bay. This meant I felt the urge to pee from 5k in until the later miles, which was not a pleasant experience. 

At each bottle station I was at the last table, which led me to slowing down to get my bottle and catching up. I probably was around 30th at the 20k bottle station. 

At 25k’s station, the pack was smaller (thanks Frank) and I stayed in the back. I drank half my bottle and gave the rest to Teshome as he missed his. 

Immediately after giving it to him, I saw Evans make a strong move that I wasn’t ready for. I didn’t feel warmed up enough to run comfortably the pace he was going. I split 4:31 that mile and had let the pack go. 

The next mile I tried to work with two other runners to catch up, but they didn’t seem to have it. I split 4:38 and decided to back off. I backed off more than I should’ve, and could slowly see Wesley in the distance fading. 

I enjoyed these miles, but should’ve focused on being a hunter. Once I caught Wesley and moved into 6th, I felt confident that I would finish where I was. I looked back before I caught Wesley and couldn’t see whoever was next, so I hoped someone else would fade, but it seemed unlikely with our relatively slow first 15.5 miles. 

At about 24 I was cruising down the hills of Central Park, enjoying myself when I heard “Go Mantz, Go Clayton” and turned and saw Clayton Young . I was pretty mad. I thought I had 6th in the bag, and Clayton was moving. I made a hard surge right before the 25 mile mark (55.9 from mile 25 to a mile to go) then tried to move well the next 800. 

With 400m to go I saw the 5th place finished fading and tried to catch him, but I knew I was much too late. Finished right at 2:09:00, 10 seconds back from 5th. The clock originally had my name with 2:08:, but they always round up. 

Good race today, I’m not sure what I should’ve done differently other than pushed harder during miles 19-24 as I lost most of my ground during these miles. It’s easy to say that looking back on it though.
