Crabtree -> Forester -> Glen -> Vidatte

Crabtree -> Whitney -> Crabtree

Horseshoe -> Crabtree Meadows

Beautiful and clear day. Was sad to be leaving Crabtree meadows after reminiscing on so many old memories while also making new ones. The approach to forester was super smooth and went by quickly. Crazy how different this landscape and how you interact with it are when not blanketed by snow. 

Instead of creating our own boot pack directly up a snow packed forester pass like last year, I got to take the mellowly graded switchbacks for the first time. I think I prefer the former… something about switchbacks felt like cheating. There were stunning violets at the top of the pass that reminded me how delicate and precious this ecosystem are. 

Was in a great mood the whole way down to Vidatte Meadows. Saw some marmots absolutely sprawled in the sun taking a nap. They didn’t even notice until I was within 10 feet of them. Shortly after I ran into some teenagers playing video games on their phones while completely ignoring the serene landscape around them. Hard not to wonder if the attention economy of tech is irreparably damaging all of us. And hard not to think about it I’m complicit in the crime. Something to chew on while walking down the trail I suppose.

Suds was melting by the time we got to Vidatte, so I deposited him and my bear can at the campsite and set off for an out and back to the top of Glen pass to eat dinner and watch the  alpenglow from up high. Felt great and really ripped the climb up. Ran into Fanta and Slackline one last time. What a treat. Once I got to the top of the pass I ate some cold soaked PB ramen and then decided I should try to make it back to camp before dark. Couldn’t help but think of booting up Glen pass with the crew last year, and how scared Nick was. Also couldn’t get over the chills of remembering Lily’s self arrest above a cliff band on the icy descent last year. Crazy how quickly things can happen in the mountains.

Caught some hikers on the way down and had some great conversations. Really ripped the last few miles down trying to make it back. Probably should have put on the headlamp for the last few creek crossings, but managed to stay upright anyways.

Glorious day. Wish I could’ve kept it rolling and walked all through the night. What a way to celebrate the 4th.
