Never gone out Kearsarge before. What a stunning set of alpine lakes. Was feeling pretty melancholy leaving the mountains, but that’s how it always is. Felt pretty good and made quick work of the pass. Met a hiker named Haiku on the way out that I managed to convince to give us a ride back to Lone Pine. Ran into our first ranger on the down. Never got my permit checked the whole PCT so was actually kind of excited to show the ranger my permit and answer all his LNT questions.

We bought Haiku a coffee milkshake in Independence as a thanks for the ride. After getting deposited at 395 and Whitney Portal Road we got an easy hitch to the intersection with Horseshow Meadows road. 

Then things got interesting. After about 10 mins a guy rolled to a stop, but his truck was utterly filled to the brim with stuff and he had no room for us inside. However, he proposed we stand on the runners and hold onto the top bars and he’d get us to the next intersection which would be a more convenient hitch. Driving 5 miles at about 30ish holding onto the outside of the truck was definitely a new one for me. 

Once we got to the next intersection we quickly got picked up by some locals going for a hike. They warned us they’d stop for a bit at a lavender farm on the way up. We got to meet the owner and hear all about her life story, her favorite dog, and how her farm nearly burned down in a wildfire last year. What an incredible lady. Eventually we jumped back into the bed and got to watch the world go by as we zoomed up the switchbacks to the TH. What a magical way to end the trip.

Huge shoutout to Suds Kannan for being game for my half-baked ideas and absolutely sending it on his first backpacking trip in the Sierra. Once this dude learns how to eat he’ll be unstoppable.
